When Prayer Seems Futile
Have you ever felt like prayer is a waste of time? That God is distant, uncaring, or even playing golf while you’re struggling? You’re not alone. Many of us have been there, wondering why our fervent prayers seem to fall on deaf ears.
A Personal Struggle
I’ve faced this dilemma myself. My husband, a devout Christian leader, suffered a devastating mental breakdown. Despite countless prayers from loved ones, he didn’t recover. Today, he resides in a care home. It’s hard not to question the purpose of prayer when it seems like God isn’t listening.
The Promises of Scripture
We cling to Bible verses that promise healing and restoration, such as James 5:15: “The prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.” But what happens when these promises aren’t fulfilled? Do we give up on prayer, or do we dig deeper?
Beyond the Wish List
In my search for answers, I’ve come to realize that prayer isn’t about reciting a list of wants to God. It’s not about checking off answers or cashing in on promises. When we focus solely on answers, we can become manipulative in our praying, treating God like a genie who exists to serve us. And when the answers don’t meet our expectations, we get frustrated with God.
The Mystery of Prayer
There will always be an air of mystery surrounding prayer. Why does God seem silent and distant when we need Him most? Why do answers to prayer seem inconsistent? Some people are healed, while others are not. The truth is, we may never fully understand God’s ways.
The True Purpose of Prayer
So, what’s the point of prayer? I believe the chief end of prayer is to develop a deep, loving relationship with God. As we get to know Him, we learn to trust Him. Instead of praying for specific outcomes, we pray for His will to be done. In aligning ourselves with God’s universal purposes, we discover answers that are bigger and better than we ever imagined.
A Heart of Trust
In the midst of uncertainty, we can choose to press in deeper, to trust God even when we don’t understand. As Psalm 9:10 reminds us, “Those who know Your name will trust in You, for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek You.” May we learn to be still, to know that God is God, and to trust in His goodness, even when the answers aren’t what we expect.
