From “Give Me” to “Make Me”: A Deeper Prayer Shift

The Power of Shifting Our Prayers

Have you ever felt frustrated with God’s responses to your prayers? Perhaps you’ve asked for healing, financial provision, or restoration of a broken relationship, only to feel like God isn’t doing anything. You’re not alone.

A Different Approach

A friend shared a valuable insight that changed my perspective. Instead of constantly asking God to give us something, what if we asked Him to make us into something? For example, we could pray, “Make me more like Jesus. Make me more compassionate. Make me a woman of faith.”

From “Give Me” to “Make Me”

When we pray “Give me,” we’re treating God as if He exists to serve us. In contrast, when we pray “Make me,” we acknowledge that He is our God and we want to serve Him. This subtle shift in our prayers can have a profound impact on our relationship with God.

God’s Priorities

Above all else, God is interested in our eternal welfare. He’s more concerned with shaping our character than with providing temporary comforts. Conforming us to Christ-likeness takes time, effort, and often, adversity.

Temporal vs. Eternal Answers

The answers to “Give me” prayers are temporary and fleeting, whereas the answers to “Make me” prayers are eternal and transformative. By praying “Make me,” we’re inviting God to work in us, even if it means delaying or denying our immediate requests.

A Heartfelt Prayer

Father, thank you for loving me enough not to give me everything I ask for. Make me into a woman of faith. I want to be more like Jesus. Amen.

By shifting our focus from what we want God to do for us to what we want Him to do in us, we open ourselves up to a deeper, more meaningful relationship with our Creator.
