The Elusive Virtue of Humility
As a Christian leader, it’s easy to get caught up in our own talents and abilities. We may possess exceptional speaking skills, a beautiful singing voice, or a sharp mind, but it’s crucial to remember that these gifts are not our own doing. They are blessings from God, and can be taken away at any moment.
A Humbling Reality Check
I once met a young Christian leader who struggled with humility. Despite his many talents, he knew he should be humble, but found it difficult to achieve. He spent hours praying for humility, but I suggested a simpler approach. I reminded him that every gift he possessed was a blessing from God, and could be taken away in an instant. This realization can be a powerful catalyst for humility.
The True Meaning of Humility
As Andrew Murray so eloquently put it, “Humility is perfect quietness of heart… It is to have no trouble. It is never to be fretted or irritated or sore or disappointed.” This is a high standard to strive for, but one that is essential for living a life of true humility.
Following in Jesus’ Footsteps
In Philippians chapter two, we see the ultimate example of humility in Jesus Christ. He willingly gave up his divine privileges and took on human form, suffering and dying on the cross for our sins. As followers of Christ, we should strive to emulate this humility, recognizing our own sinfulness and dependence on God’s grace and mercy.
The Path to True Happiness
The Bible promises that those who are poor in spirit will be blessed. But what does this mean? It means recognizing our own limitations and sinfulness, and relying solely on God’s grace and mercy for salvation. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, we can experience true happiness and peace, even in the midst of trials and tribulations.
A Call to Action
So how can we cultivate humility in our daily lives? By acknowledging our dependence on God, and yielding to the Holy Spirit. As we do so, we can experience a deeper sense of peace and happiness, and live a life that honors God.
