When Faith Meets Fear
David’s unexpected arrival on the battlefield was more than just a coincidence. As he stepped into the fray, he brought with him a refreshing perspective that would change the course of history. While his brothers and the other soldiers were transfixed by the towering figure of Goliath, David’s eyes were fixed on something greater – the living God.
A Different Focus
Goliath’s taunts and boasts echoed through the valley, but David’s response was not one of anger or fear. Instead, he asked a poignant question: “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26, NIV). In a world where size and strength seemed to matter most, David saw beyond the physical realm and into the spiritual.
Majoring in God
While the soldiers were consumed by Goliath’s intimidation, David majored in God’s power. He saw the giant, but his gaze was fixed on the Almighty. This is evident in his bold declaration: “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel” (1 Samuel 17:45).
A Prayer for Perspective
As we face our own giants, may we learn from David’s example. May our thoughts and words turn first to God, rather than the problems that surround us. May our daily rhythms be marked by a focus on His power, rather than our own limitations. Lord God, train us to walk on your path. Teach us to see you in situations that are dangerous and difficult.
Walking by Faith
In a world that often prioritizes sight over faith, may we choose to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). When the giants of fear, doubt, and uncertainty loom large, may we look to the God of our salvation, who is exalted above all (Psalm 18:46).
