The Power of Unconditional Love
A Principle of Life
A quote by John Harrigan has become a guiding principle in my life: “Love someone when they deserve it the least.” This simple yet profound statement highlights the challenge we face in loving others, especially when they are at their worst.
The Struggle to Love
As humans, we often find ourselves struggling to love those who may not deserve it. I recall times in my life when my behavior was out of control, and I couldn’t stand myself. As a young mother and wife, I would experience intense emotional swings, leaving me feeling miserable and unlovable. In those moments, a gentle touch or a kind word could have made all the difference.
Supernatural Love
Loving someone when they deserve it the least requires a love that transcends human capabilities. It demands a supernatural love that flows from the heart of God. Jesus, who was criticized for associating with “sinners,” showed us what it means to love the unlovable. He died for the ungodly, demonstrating God’s love for us while we were still sinners.
The Bible’s Wisdom
The Bible reminds us that “we love because he first loved us” (1 John 1:19). Jesus’ teachings emphasize the importance of loving our enemies and doing good to those who may not deserve it (Luke 6:32-35). His message is clear: love is not limited to those who love us back; it’s about showing kindness to all, regardless of their actions.
A Prayer for Mercy
Dear Lord, I thank you for loving me enough to die for my sins. I pray that your love will compel me to love those who seem unlovable, just as you have loved me. Grant me the grace to extend mercy to all, just as your Father is merciful.
Random Acts of Kindness
It’s remarkable how random acts of kindness can affect those around us. By showing love and compassion to others, we can create a ripple effect of kindness that spreads far and wide. So let’s strive to love without condition, just as Jesus loves us.
