Transforming Our Focus
As we navigate the ups and downs of life, it’s easy to get caught up in the never-ending list of tasks that need to be accomplished. With a new baby and a household to manage, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and focused on getting things done. But as we grow older and gain more life experience, it’s essential to shift our focus from mere task-completion to prioritizing what truly matters – our relationships and well-being.
A Lesson from a Broken Mower
I recently had an encounter with an old electric hover mower that taught me a valuable lesson. The mower, much like myself, was worn out and struggling to perform its job. When I stumbled upon a newer, albeit still broken, mower online, I saw an opportunity to breathe new life into my old machine. After successfully replacing the motor, I was thrilled to see my mower cutting grass with renewed vigor. But little did I know, God was using this experience to get my attention.
A Heart of Stone or Flesh?
The prophet Ezekiel writes, “I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them” (Ezekiel 11:19-20, ESV). As I reflected on my experience with the mower, I realized that I had been operating with a heart of stone – focused on tasks and accomplishments rather than on God and the people around me. But God desires to give us a new heart, one that beats with a Kingdom purpose.
A New Heart, A New Start
Today, we have the opportunity to receive a new heart, one that prioritizes relationships and seeks to honor God above all else. As we pray for a heart of flesh, we can expect to experience a transformation that goes beyond mere task-completion. We can rise up on wings like eagles, singing God’s praises with renewed passion and purpose.
Prayer
Dear Lord, create in us a new heart, one that beats with a Kingdom purpose. Help us to prioritize relationships and seek to honor You above all else. Grant us a heart of flesh, that we may walk in Your statutes and obey Your commands. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.
