The Unlikely King
In the epic film Gladiator, a Roman general named Maximus leads his legionaries to victory over Germanic tribes. However, his triumph is short-lived, as he soon finds himself at odds with the corrupt Emperor Commodus. Despite being forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator, Maximus remains determined to seek justice for his family’s brutal murder.
A Hero for the Ages
The Jews of Jesus’ day were waiting for a hero who would overthrow their Roman oppressors and establish Israel as a dominant power once again. They had returned from exile in Babylon, but foreigners still ruled over them. Through the prophets, God had promised an empire-conquering King who would bring salvation to his people.
Jesus: The Unexpected King
However, Jesus did not fit the mold of a traditional king. Instead of seeking power and glory, he came humbly, riding on a donkey rather than a majestic steed. His kingdom was not one of conquest and domination, but of love, compassion, and self-sacrifice. Despite his unconventional approach, Jesus claimed to be the long-awaited King, the Messiah who would bring justice and salvation to all people.
A New Kind of Kingdom
Jesus’ kingdom was not limited to a physical realm, but encompassed the hearts and minds of all people. He taught that true greatness is not measured by wealth, power, or status, but by humility, kindness, and a willingness to serve others. His message was radical and counterintuitive, yet it resonated deeply with those who were hungry for hope and transformation.
The Cross: A Symbol of Victory
For Jesus, the cross was not a symbol of defeat, but of victory. By suffering injustice and giving his life for others, he demonstrated the ultimate expression of love and selflessness. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, establishing a new kingdom that would last forever.
A Call to Follow
As followers of Jesus, we are called to embody his values of love, compassion, and self-sacrifice. We must fight against injustice and oppression, using the weapons of love and kindness rather than violence and domination. By doing so, we can bring hope and transformation to a world that desperately needs it.
The Stones Cry Out
As Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, the crowds shouted “Hosanna!” and waved palm branches in celebration. However, the Pharisees were horrified, demanding that Jesus rebuke his disciples. But Jesus replied, “If these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” The stones themselves would testify to the truth of Jesus’ message, a message that would shake the foundations of the world.
A Hero for All Time
Jesus is not just a hero for the ages, but a living, breathing presence who continues to inspire and transform lives today. His message of love and redemption is timeless, speaking to the deepest longings of the human heart. As we follow Jesus, we become part of a larger story, one that will continue to unfold until the end of time.
