The Power of Forgiveness: A Lesson from Jesus
As we struggle to forgive those who have hurt us, we often forget that we too have hurt someone who loves us unconditionally – Jesus. Until we allow Him to wash our feet, we will never have the strength to wash the feet of others.
The Secret to Forgiveness
You see, forgiveness is not about what we can do, but about what God has already done for us. We will never forgive anyone more than God has forgiven us. It’s only by surrendering to His forgiveness that we can find the strength to forgive others.
A Powerful Image
Still finding it hard to imagine forgiving those who have wronged us? Let’s go back to the upper room where Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. Can you see Him moving from one person to another, pouring water, and scrubbing away the dirt? Can you hear the sound of the water splashing and Jesus shuffling on the floor to the next person? Hold onto that image.
The Ultimate Act of Forgiveness
Notice that Jesus didn’t leave anyone out. He washed the feet of all His disciples, including Judas, who would soon betray Him. Jesus showed His betrayer equal attention and care, even knowing what was to come. This act of forgiveness was not easy for Jesus, and it won’t be easy for us either. But God will never ask us to do something He hasn’t already done.
A Lesson in Forgiveness
Jesus’ act of forgiveness teaches us that God will never call us to do something He hasn’t already done. He has forgiven us, and now He asks us to forgive others. It’s not about being able to forgive on our own, but about surrendering to His forgiveness and allowing Him to work through us. By doing so, we can find the strength to wash the feet of those who have hurt us, just as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples.
