Respecting Boundaries: A Reflection on Privacy and Intimacy with God
As I sit at my desk, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of daily life, I crave a sense of privacy. It’s not just about avoiding distractions, but about creating a space where I can focus on my work and nurture my spiritual growth. I’ve even invested in a folding wooden screen to carve out a small sanctuary for myself. But as I reflect on my desire for privacy, I’m reminded of missionaries who serve in cultures where solitude is seen as taboo. They must navigate the tension between their personal need for alone time and the cultural expectations of community.
The Paradox of Privacy
In many Western societies, we value our personal space and expect others to respect our boundaries. We knock on doors, ring doorbells, and wait for permission to enter. It’s a sign of respect and consideration for the other person’s autonomy. Yet, when it comes to our relationship with God, do we extend the same courtesy? Do we expect Him to knock before entering the inner recesses of our hearts and minds? Or do we keep certain areas locked away, hidden from His prying eyes?
A Lesson from David
The Psalmist David offers us a glimpse into his intimate relationship with God. He writes, “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God” (Psalm 139:17 NLT). David’s words convey a deep sense of trust and connection with his Heavenly Father. He has given God the key to his heart and life, and in return, he experiences a profound sense of love and understanding. Could it be that our reluctance to open ourselves fully to God stems from a lack of intimacy and trust in our relationship with Him?
From Knowledge to Intimacy
As we journey towards spiritual growth, we often focus on gaining knowledge about God. But the Hebrew and Greek meanings of the word “know” encompass more than just intellectual understanding. They imply perceiving, experiencing, and responding to God’s presence in our lives. When we prioritize intimacy with God, walking in His presence daily, our fear of vulnerability begins to dissipate. We start to unlock the private rooms of our hearts, and God’s love and light begin to shine through.
Unlocking the Private Rooms
As I reflect on my own desire for privacy, I’m reminded that true intimacy with God requires surrender and trust. It’s not about keeping certain areas of my life hidden from Him, but about inviting Him into the deepest recesses of my heart and mind. When I do, I’ll discover that He’s not just a guest, but the very Author of my life. And in His presence, I’ll find the freedom to be myself, without fear of judgment or rejection.
