Reflecting God’s Heart to Others
As believers, we’re called to embody God’s love to those around us. In John 13:34-35, Jesus commands us to love one another just as He has loved us. But let’s be honest – some people can be tough to love. Their personalities, actions, or circumstances may make it challenging to show them compassion and kindness. Yet, Jesus’ commandment isn’t optional; it’s essential to our identity as His disciples.
The Power of Reflected Love
Nature provides a beautiful illustration of this spiritual principle. A full moon illuminates the night sky, making everything visible, but it doesn’t generate its own light. Instead, it reflects the sun’s radiance. Similarly, we can’t manufacture love on our own; we need to receive it from God first. Only then can we mirror His love to others, pointing them to the ultimate source of care and compassion.
Empowered to Love
Jesus’ commandment isn’t a burden; it’s an empowerment. When we receive His love, we’re enabled to love others as He does. As Ephesians 5:1-2 reminds us, we’re called to be “imitators of God, as beloved children” and to “walk in love, just as Christ also loved [us].” This isn’t about mustering up feelings or trying to be someone we’re not. It’s about allowing God’s love to flow through us, transforming us into vessels of His grace.
The Blessing of Reflected Love
When we choose to love others as Jesus loves us, we participate in something grand and glorious. We become agents of hope, bringing light into dark places and reflecting God’s heart to a world in need. And as we do, we’re blessed – not just in our relationships, but in our very souls. By reflecting God’s love, we experience a deeper sense of connection with Him and with others, becoming the embodiment of His love in a world that desperately needs it.
