A Call to Reflection: Aligning Our Lives with God’s Purpose
The Disillusionment of Self-Centered Living
Have you ever stopped to think about why your life feels unfulfilling, despite your best efforts? You work hard, earn a decent living, and yet, you’re never truly satisfied. You’re always searching for more, but it’s like trying to fill a bottomless pit. The prophet Haggai’s words echo through the ages, “You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill.” (Haggai 1:5b-6, NIV)
The Root of the Problem
God’s people had forgotten their true purpose. They spoke His name, but their actions revealed a different story. They prioritized their own needs, neglecting the One who should have been at the center of their lives. The consequences were stark: their provisions were never enough, and their lives felt empty.
A Wake-Up Call from God
It took God’s intervention, speaking through Haggai, to awaken His people to their misguided ways. He urged them to examine their lives, to consider the consequences of their self-centeredness. And when they did, they realized that their lives weren’t truly working without God as their King.
The Freedom of Truth
This introspection can be a difficult process, but it’s essential for growth. As Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) When we confront the truth about our lives, we’re forced to make a choice: continue down the path of self-destruction or turn back to God.
A New Path Forward
When we choose to put God first, He promises to bless us. “From this day on I will bless you,” He says. (Haggai 2:19b, NIV) This is not a blessing based on our merits, but on His love and grace. He loves us enough to help us change our ways, to steer us away from the cliff of self-centeredness.
Embracing a Life Under God’s Blessing
So, take a step back and evaluate your life. Are you living a life that honors God, or are you prioritizing your own needs? Remember, God loves you, even when you fail. He longs to help you change your ways and move back to Him. When you do, you’ll begin to experience a life under His blessing, a life that’s truly fulfilling and purposeful.
