Surrendering Control: The Uncomfortable Path to True Joy in Discipleship

Embracing the Uncomfortable Path of Discipleship

As we embark on our spiritual journey, it’s essential to recognize the inherent contradictions that can arise. A recent job posting for a pastor at a small church serves as a poignant example. The congregation, comprised mainly of older individuals, seeks a leader who will reach out to younger generations while maintaining their traditional worship and preaching style. This paradoxical requirement begs the question: Can we truly follow Jesus while insisting on doing things our way?

The Disciples’ Misstep

We find a striking parallel in the story of Jesus’ disciples. When Jesus revealed to them that He would soon face unimaginable suffering and death, Peter, who had just proclaimed his faith, took it upon himself to correct Jesus. Peter’s rebuke was rooted in his own understanding of how Jesus should fulfill His messianic role. In essence, Peter was saying, “Jesus, I’m sure you’ve got it wrong. I know you’re the Messiah, but your plan is too radical.”

The Cost of Discipleship

On another occasion, Jesus preached a sermon about the harsh realities of discipleship, and many of His followers were taken aback. They questioned who could be expected to adhere to such a demanding teaching. As a result, many of them returned to their old ways, abandoning Jesus. This incident highlights the fundamental principle of following Jesus: embracing change as the norm, not the exception. It’s in this transformative process that we discover joy in the presence of Jesus.

The Path to True Joy

Following Jesus requires us to surrender our own desires and expectations, embracing the uncomfortable and the unknown. As we commit to this path, we come to realize that true joy is not found in our own comfort zones, but in the presence of Jesus. By relinquishing our need for control and embracing the radical nature of discipleship, we can experience the transformative power of God’s love. Will you take the first step on this journey, even when it challenges your understanding of what it means to follow Jesus?
