Hearing God’s Gentle Voice in the Chaos

The Power of a Gentle Response

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like you were crying out for help, but it seemed like no one was listening? Maybe you’ve been in a crowded restaurant, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of morning coffee-goers, and all you wanted was a moment of peace. But instead, you were treated to the ear-piercing cries of a toddler, desperately calling out to her grandpa.

As I reflect on that moment, I’m reminded of the words of Psalm 18: “I called to the Lord – in my distress I called to the Lord – I cried to my God, He heard my voice – He reached down – the Lord was my support He rescued me because he delighted in me.” It’s a powerful reminder that when we cry out to God, He hears us.

The Toddler’s Cry

The toddler’s persistence was impressive, to say the least. She called out to her grandpa again and again, refusing to be ignored. And finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he turned to her and said, “I see you.” Those two simple words were all she needed to quiet down and settle into her seat.

God’s Gentle Response

It’s easy to relate to that toddler’s cry, isn’t it? We’ve all been there – crying out to God, feeling like we’re not being heard, wondering if He’s even listening. But the truth is, God is always listening. He’s always waiting for us to quiet down and listen to His gentle response.

Settling into God’s Love

The child in the restaurant didn’t need her grandpa to do anything spectacular; she just needed to know that he saw her. And that’s exactly what we need from God – to know that He sees us, that He hears us, and that He delights in us. When we can settle into that knowledge, we can find peace in the midst of chaos.

Whispering Instead of Shouting

As I reflect on my own prayer life, I wonder how much energy I waste on shouting when all I need to do is whisper. God is not deaf; He’s not ignoring us. He’s simply waiting for us to quiet down and listen to His gentle voice.

God’s Delight

The psalmist reminds us that God rescues us because He delights in us. What a powerful truth! When we cry out to God, we can be confident that He will respond, not because we’re worthy, but because He delights in us.

So the next time you feel like crying out to God, remember the toddler in the restaurant. Remember that God is always listening, always waiting for us to quiet down and listen to His gentle response. And when you do, you’ll hear Him whisper, “I see you.”
