The Unrelenting Need for God in Motherhood
As mothers, we’re constantly reminded of our limitations. The mundane tasks, the desperate moments, the joys, and the sorrows all point to one undeniable truth: we need God. Every hour, every minute, every breath, we need him. This realization is both humbling and liberating.
The Illusion of Self-Sufficiency
Motherhood has a way of exposing our weaknesses and insufficiencies. We can’t answer all our children’s questions, heal their deepest wounds, or satisfy their greatest longings. But in our weakness, God invites us to know him and lead our children to him. He reminds us that his grace is sufficient, and his power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).
The Earthy Reality of Motherhood
Raising children is a messy, earthy business. It’s labor, delivery, and adoption paperwork; smelly diapers and sticky fingers; grass stains and tangled hair. But this earthiness serves a good purpose. It reminds us that we’re dependent creatures, made by our Creator for his glory (Gen. 1:26–30). When we resist this reality, problems arise. However, a humble recognition of who God is and who we are leads to our rescue from self-sufficiency.
The Sanctifying Power of Motherhood
Motherhood uncovers our messy hearts, revealing our unmet expectations, unfulfilled desires, and selfishness. But when God uses motherhood to open our eyes to our finiteness, dependence on him, and need for him, it becomes a means of sanctification. It’s holy ground when we see who we are, who God is, and cry out to him: “We’re weak, but you are strong. We need you, Lord.”
The Heart-Cry for More of God
As Christian mothers, our heart-cry is for more of God – to know him better, as he reveals himself in Scripture, and for knowing him to transform our hearts and homes. We can’t do everything, be everywhere, or say all the right words. But God is all-powerful, present everywhere, all-knowing, and all-wise. We need the Lord, and so do our families.
The Lifelong Journey of Knowing God
Knowing God is a lifelong journey that begins with knowing Jesus. It starts at the foot of the cross, gazing at our beautiful, pierced Savior, who poured out his blood for our salvation. As we meditate on God’s attributes, we see his justice, grace, mercy, wisdom, love, and generosity displayed. We’ll explore thirty attributes that show us more of who God is, connecting his character to the gospel and applying what we learn to our everyday lives as moms.
The Treasure of Family and the Need for God
My family is my greatest earthly treasure. As I navigate the chaos of motherhood, I’m reminded that only the Lord truly satisfies. I need a bigger view of God, one that sees him as sovereign over my plans and schedule, powerful to heal broken hearts and bodies, and strong enough to save and keep his people. Every hour, I need him.
