The Power of Influence: A Call to Emulate Christ
As the apostle Paul penned in Galatians 4:12, “Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I also have become as you are.” This poignant verse highlights the profound impact of influence on our lives. Influence is the ability to shape someone’s thoughts, actions, and decisions, often in subtle yet significant ways.
Early Influences
We’ve all been influenced by others, whether it’s our parents, teachers, or peers. These early influences can shape our worldview, values, and lifestyle. For many of us, our parents were the first and most significant influencers in our lives. We absorbed their beliefs, values, and attitudes, often without even realizing it. Later, teachers and peers added their own influences, further shaping our perspectives.
The Galatian Christians: A Lesson in Influence
In Galatians 4:12, Paul is urging the Galatian Christians to emulate him, to put themselves in his shoes and understand his journey. He’s saying, “I’ve been where you are; I know what it’s like to be bound by the law.” Paul is asking them to fully embrace their freedom in Christ, just as he has done. He’s warning them against throwing away the blessings they’ve received and instead, to show him the same respect they once did.
The Dangers of Negative Influence
Those who influence us can have a profound impact on our behavior and lifestyle. It’s essential to be cautious about who we allow to influence us, especially in today’s world where liberal and anti-Christ ideologies abound. We need to be mindful of the attitudes, ideas, and characteristics we absorb from those around us. We must recognize that we instinctively mirror the behaviors of those we surround ourselves with, often without even realizing it.
How People Influence Us
Influence can take many forms. Some people influence through political savvy, self-promotion, building trust, and networking. Others influence through their words, actions, and character. As Christians, we need to be aware of the influences in our lives, both within and outside the church. We must ensure that we’re not being swayed by the wrong people or ideologies.
Emulating Christ
Like Paul, Jesus calls us to emulate Him. He’s our ultimate influencer, our role model, and our guide. As we strive to become more like Him, we must ask ourselves, “By whom am I influenced?” Who is my number one influencer? Is it Jesus, or is it someone or something else? As we reflect on these questions, let us remember that our goal should be to influence others for Christ, just as He has influenced us.
