The Power of Selfless Prayer
When Moses returned to the Lord, he uttered a prayer that would change the course of history. “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. But now, if Thou wilt, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Thy book which Thou hast written!” (Exodus 32:31-32). This remarkable prayer reveals the heart of a true intercessor.
Moses, the leader of Israel, was willing to sacrifice his own standing with God for the sake of his people. He knew he had favor with the Lord, but he chose to put the needs of others above his own. In essence, he said, “If You won’t forgive them, then don’t forgive me either.” This selfless attitude is the hallmark of a true intercessor.
Bound Together in Prayer
Moses’ soul was inextricably linked with the future of Israel. He understood that his own blessing was tied to the fulfillment of God’s promise to the Hebrews. If God wouldn’t forgive them, He couldn’t bless Moses either. This is a powerful lesson for us today. We must see ourselves as irreversibly bound together with the lives of those we pray for – our family, friends, community, and nation.
Breaking Through Barriers
Have you ever struggled to break through in your personal life? Perhaps you’ve been focusing too much on your own needs and not enough on praying for others. Try making a prayer list of people with desperate needs, and as you intercede for them, see if the Holy Spirit doesn’t break through for you too. Don’t forget to include your enemies and those who have hurt you. Remember the story of Job, who was healed when he prayed for his friends (Job 42:10).
Transforming Ourselves and the World
Intercession not only transforms the world, but it also transforms us. It’s a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and bringing about change. As we pray selflessly for others, we open ourselves up to the transformative power of God.
A Prayer for Mercy
Lord Jesus, I am in awe of Your willingness to show mercy. You changed Your mind about judgment on sinners because of one man, Moses. Lord, in my world and times, let me be that one who so delights You, who is so intimate with You, that my prayer for mercy outweighs Your judgment to destroy the disobedient. May the favor You have given to me be multiplied to those who yet do not know You, and may it spread until all the earth is filled with Your glory!
