The Gentle Tap of Christ’s Courtesy
Have you ever stopped to consider the courtesy of Christ? I hadn’t, until I began to explore this fascinating aspect of Jesus’ nature. It’s like suddenly noticing a particular type of car everywhere you go – once you’re aware of it, you can’t help but see it. And what I discovered was astonishing: Jesus embodies courtesy in a way that puts even the most refined etiquette experts to shame.
A Knock at the Door
He always knocks before entering, even though he has every right to barge in. After all, he owns our hearts. But he chooses to wait for our invitation, patiently standing at the door, waiting for us to respond to his gentle tap (Revelations 3:20). And when we open the door, he brings a gift – the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).
A Servant’s Heart
As he enters, he serves. He doesn’t come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). You might find him wearing your apron, busy serving the guests who have gathered (John 13:4-5). He takes the time to give thanks before eating, and ensures that every last crumb is cleaned up (Matthew 14:19-20).
Respect and Consideration
Christ is courteous enough to introduce himself, sharing his name with us (Exodus 3:15), and addressing us by ours (John 10:3). He listens intently, never interrupting, and is always punctual – never early, never late (Ecclesiastes 3:1). When we’re checking our watches, it’s because we’re operating on a different schedule.
Opening Doors
Paul was able to preach at Troas because “the Lord had opened a door” (2 Corinthians 2:12). Christ opens doors for us, demonstrating his abundant respect for us. He pulls out the chair for us, giving us a seat with him in the heavens (Ephesians 2:6).
A Heart of Respect
My wife has a heart for single moms, and she loves to include them in our gatherings. I’ve noticed how much they appreciate it when I pull out their chair. It’s a small act of courtesy, but it speaks volumes about respect and consideration. Has it been a while since someone showed you that kind of respect?
Receiving Christ’s Courtesy
We live in a world where people can be rude and inconsiderate. We snatch parking spots, forget names, interrupt, and fail to show up. But Christ offers us a different way. He longs to show us courtesy, to cherish and honor us as his beloved. As we receive his love, we’ll find it easier to give ours. As we reflect on his courtesy to us, we’ll be more likely to offer the same to others. So let Jesus pull out your chair. Receive his courtesy, and let it transform your heart.
