Embracing God’s Design for Women
In today’s society, feminism has become an integral part of our culture, shaping our thoughts and beliefs about gender roles. While some Christian women may not identify as feminists, it’s impossible to escape the influence of feminism. Author Courtney Reissig sheds light on the subtle ways feminism has impacted our lives and encourages women to reclaim their God-given identity.
The Blurred Lines of Independence
Reissig emphasizes the importance of women embracing their minds, interests, and personalities, which are all part of being created in God’s image. However, she warns against confusing godly independence with ungodly self-sufficiency. Women should be independent in the sense that they’re not defined by their relationship to a man, but they should also recognize their dependence on God, their Creator.
The Roots of Feminism
Feminism emerged as a response to real needs in society, such as the right to vote, own property, and earn a fair wage. While these achievements are commendable, Reissig argues that feminism is not the ultimate answer, especially when it contradicts biblical teachings on men and women. Sin is the root cause of the struggles between men and women, and as Christians, we have a better answer – one that goes back to Genesis 1.
A Fresh Perspective
Reissig shares her personal journey from being a militant feminist to embracing God’s design for women. She encourages women to respect God’s design for men as well, recognizing that both genders have value and dignity. Marriage, often viewed as a hindrance to ambition, is actually a celebration of God’s good gift.
Understanding Limits and Design
Reissig highlights the importance of understanding our limits as finite beings, which is not a slight, but rather a reflection of God’s design. Men and women have different functions, but both are limited. When we focus on limits, we miss the point about our design as women – to tell a story about God’s glory and who he is.
The Influence of Feminism on Christian Women
Reissig identifies two ways feminism influences Christian women: in their views on marriage and children, and in their relationships with men. While women should be strong and competent, they should not confuse these attributes with sinful impulses toward independence. Submission, often viewed as a taboo word, is actually a biblical concept that needs to be understood and reclaimed.
Recovering God’s Good Design
Through her book, Reissig aims to help Christians recover God’s good design for women, pushing back against both feminism and 1950s stereotypes related to gender roles. By combining personal narrative, practical examples, and biblical teaching, she encourages women to embrace their God-given identity and live out their faith in a way that honors God.
