Understanding Our Identity in God’s Image
As parents, we often teach our children that they are made in God’s image, but have you ever stopped to think about what that really means? It’s a concept that’s rooted in the Bible, but can be difficult to explain to our kids.
Reflecting God’s Characteristics
One way to understand this concept is to look at the characteristics that God has given us. We are creators, just like God, and when we make things, we are reflecting His creative nature. We also love and care for others, just as God loves and cares for us. These characteristics are a part of who we are as image-bearers of God.
Imaging God to the World
Just like the moon reflects the light of the sun, we are designed to reflect God’s character to the world around us. We do this by living out the characteristics that God has given us, such as love, patience, and kindness. As we do so, we are showing others who God is and what He is like.
A Deeper Understanding
To help our kids understand this concept, we can use everyday examples. For instance, we can point out how they may resemble their parents or grandparents in certain ways. This can help them understand that they are an image of their earthly parents, just as we are an image of our heavenly Father.
More Questions, More Answers
As parents, we’re often faced with tough questions from our kids. How do we answer them? Here are some resources to help:
- Will God Always Keep Me Safe? We can’t promise that bad things won’t happen, but we can trust in God’s sovereignty and love.
- Does God Love Everyone the Same? God hates sin, but He loves us and wants a relationship with us.
- If God Speaks to Me, Why Can’t I Hear Him? We can’t hear God audibly, but He speaks to us through His Word.
- Does God Love Me More When I Obey My Mom and Dad? God’s love for us is not based on our actions, but on His character.
By understanding our identity in God’s image, we can help our kids develop a deeper understanding of who they are and whose they are.
