Unraveling the Mystery of Masculinity and Femininity
The Elusive Nature of Gender
In C.S. Lewis’s science fiction novel Perelandra, Dr. Ransom encounters an angelic celebration on the planet Venus, where he observes that some angels appear masculine and others feminine. Although he can’t pinpoint the exact difference, it’s undeniable. This phenomenon resonates with many of us, as we struggle to define masculinity and femininity despite recognizing them when we see them.
A Biblical Approach
Tim Keller suggests that instead of defining or denying masculinity and femininity, we should appreciate the natural differences that emerge between men and women as they grow in Christ. This means that true, biblical masculinity and femininity are the result of long-term sanctification in Christian men and women, respectively.
The Body’s Influence
Writer and teacher Jen Wilkin proposes that our physical differences contribute to our nonphysical differences. For instance, men’s greater physical size and strength shape their worldview, making them less conscious of physical vulnerability. Women, on the other hand, are more attuned to vulnerability due to their physical experiences. This principle makes sense, as our body, soul, and spirit are deeply connected.
Biblical Insights
In 1 Timothy 2:8, Paul instructs men to pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling. This directive is not meant to exclude women from prayer, but rather to address a specific issue among men. Paul’s words imply that men are more likely to need encouragement to pray and to overcome quarrelsomeness. This tendency is not absolute, but it reflects a general pattern.
Prayer as a Reflection of Godliness
Paul’s call to men to pray is not just a response to a particular behavior, but also has wider application. It highlights the importance of prayer in men’s lives, encouraging them to wrestle with God instead of with each other. This emphasis on prayer is a reflection of godliness, which is essential for both men and women.
A Deeper Understanding
As we explore the complexities of masculinity and femininity, we must be careful not to oversimplify or generalize. Instead, we should appreciate the nuances and variations that exist within each sex. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be men and women who glorify God in everything we do.
