The Transformative Power of a Heavenly Mindset
A Shift in Perspective
On a fateful Veterans Day, my life was forever changed. My three-year-old son, Cam, had professed his faith in Christ just the day before, and then suddenly, he was gone. The shock and grief were overwhelming, but in the midst of sorrow, something remarkable happened. My focus shifted heavenward, and my daily mindset was transformed.
The Problem of Earthly Mindedness
Many Christians struggle with a lack of joy, hope, and purpose in their spiritual lives. This is often due to an eschatological problem – a lack of awareness of their eternal trajectory. We live in a fallen world, waiting for Christ’s return, yet we often focus on the present without considering the eternal implications. This “earthly mindedness” can lead to a mediocre relationship with Christ, lacking the depth and richness that God intends for us.
A New Perspective
The apostle Paul’s theology of heaven offers a solution to this problem. By setting our hearts and minds “on things above” (Col. 3:1–2), we can experience a game-changing transformation. When we live as citizens of heaven, our daily lives are informed and driven by eternal realities. This heavenward mindset brings comfort, hope, and purpose, even in the midst of suffering.
A Personal Journey
After my son’s passing, I began to think about heaven constantly. I felt a sense of disconnection from the world around me, but as I delved into the letters of Paul, I discovered a kindred spirit. His writings were filled with references to heaven and eternity, and I found solace in his heavenly perspective. Paul’s life was a testament to the power of a heavenward mindset, and I was inspired to follow his example.
The Riches of a Heavenward Life
Living with a heavenly mindset has brought me great spiritual riches. I have experienced deeper fellowship with Jesus, more hope and comfort, and a greater sense of purpose. My ministry, prayer, and evangelism have been revitalized, and I have discovered a new sense of joy and purpose in my daily life.
A Companion on the Journey
Paul’s writings have been a constant companion on my heavenly journey. His letters have reminded me that heaven is not just a distant hope but a present reality that informs and transforms my daily life. As I continue to walk this path, I am grateful for the apostle’s guidance and inspiration.
A Life of Eternal Significance
In the end, it is not about how long we live but about living a life of eternal significance. By embracing a heavenward mindset, we can experience a life that is rich, purposeful, and filled with hope. We can live as citizens of heaven, even now, and find comfort, joy, and purpose in the midst of a fallen world.
