Unwavering Devotion: The Surprising Nature of God’s Love

The Unconditional Love of God

A Love That Defies Human Understanding

When we consider the depths of God’s love, we often struggle to comprehend its true nature. We may think that God’s love is a response to our inherent value or worth, but Scripture paints a different picture. In Romans 5:6-11, we’re reminded that God’s love is not based on our merits, but rather on his sovereign and gracious choice.

The Rebellion of Humanity

We were once enemies of God, deserving only of his wrath and eternal damnation. Yet, in spite of our rebellion, God chose to love us. This love is not a reaction to our value as image bearers, but rather a demonstration of his steadfast and unfailing affection.

The Cross: A Display of Grace

The cross is an expression of God’s grace, not a response to our worthiness. If we were “treasures” in God’s sight, why would he need to show us grace? The cross would then become a matter of paying what is owed, rather than a demonstration of his unconditional love.

God’s Sovereign Choice

What stirred God’s heart to send his Son was not our value, but his own sovereign and gracious love. He chose to love us, not because we were deserving, but in spite of our moral bankruptcy. This love is not based on our worth, but on his character.

The Blood of Christ

The precious blood of Christ was required to satisfy the holy demands of God’s character. It was not because we were valuable that an immeasurably high price was required, but because our sin was so evil and the one we sinned against was so gloriously good.

A Love That Transforms

Jesus is not ashamed of those who are hurting and hopeless. He claims rebels like us as his own, transforming us through his power and love. Let us marvel at the love of Christ that chooses to love us, not because of our worth, but in spite of our unworthiness.
