The Unshakeable Foundation of Self-Worth
In a world that celebrates achievements, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that our worth is tied to our accomplishments. We’re taught from a young age that success is the key to happiness and fulfillment. But what happens when we can no longer achieve due to circumstances beyond our control? Our sense of self-worth begins to crumble, leaving us feeling worthless and like a burden to others.
A Different Value System
God’s perspective on self-worth is radically different from the world’s. He values us for who we are, not for what we do. In Ephesians 1:4, we’re reminded that God chose us in Christ before the creation of the world, long before we had done anything to prove our worth. This truth is both liberating and empowering.
Seeing Ourselves Through God’s Eyes
True self-worth comes from seeing ourselves as God sees us: as people for whom Christ died, in whom Christ lives. The phrase “in Christ” is used over 172 times in the New Testament, emphasizing the significance of our position in Christ. We’re washed by His blood, clothed in His righteousness, and filled with His Spirit. This privilege is available to all who accept His gracious offer.
Being vs. Doing
A chance encounter with an engineer helped me understand the importance of prioritizing my identity. When I introduced him as an engineer, he corrected me, saying, “I’m a person who does engineering.” This subtle distinction highlights the difference between being and doing. As believers, our identity is rooted in Christ, not in our accomplishments.
Unconditional Value
God’s value system is based on His unconditional love for us. He sent His only Son to die for us, demonstrating the depth of His love. He longs to be close to us, regardless of our past or present circumstances. As Romans 8:1 reminds us, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Living by God’s Value System
As we navigate the ups and downs of life, let’s remember to see ourselves as God sees us. May we live by His value system, rooted in the knowledge that we’re beloved children of God. Dear God, help us to see ourselves as you see us, and to live by your value system.
