Breaking Free from the Past: A Journey of Surrender and Redemption

Embracing God’s Guidance in Times of Temptation

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Before I surrendered my life to Jesus, I thought I knew what was best for me. I was caught up in the thrill of exploring my newfound freedoms, including a romantic relationship. However, as I grew closer to God, I realized that this relationship was not aligned with His plan for my life. Letting go was a struggle, but I knew I had to obey God’s calling.

The Power of Surrender

Surrendering my desires to God led me to Bible College in 1983, where I learned a valuable lesson: just because I could do something didn’t mean I should. The self-centered pride, success, heartache, guilt, embarrassment, and shame I accumulated during that time weighed heavily on my heart. But God was faithful to guide me through the darkness.

A Chance Encounter

Recently, I received a phone call from an old friend, and our conversation transported me back to a bygone era. The connection was so strong that it caught me off guard, and memories came flooding back. In that moment, I found myself curious about my past, including my ex-girlfriend – a mistake that would soon cost me my inner peace.

The Danger of Nostalgia

After the call, I felt a deep sense of sadness and wistfulness for times past. I lacked the conviction to let go of my curiosity, and I was enthralled by the memories. That’s when I cried out to God for help, asking Him to free me from the grip of nostalgia. I knew I had to move forward, not backward.

The Gift of Repentance

When I reached a place of submission, God’s peace flooded my heart once more. With that peace came a vivid picture: a lake in a barren wood, with a warning sign that read, “NO FISHING!” The message was clear: repentance is not just a feeling, but a deliberate action. I had to turn away from the sin of nostalgia and focus on moving forward with Jesus.

The Blessing of Forgiveness

Psalm 32:1-2 reminds us that “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity…” (ESV). What a glorious truth! God’s forgiveness is available to all who seek it.

A Prayer for Freedom

Lord, how sweet is the sound of Jesus’ love and forgiveness to a sinner’s ears. May we always remember to trust in You with all our hearts, and not lean on our own understanding. Amen.
