The Blessings We Borrow: A Humble Heart’s Reflection

The Paradox of Possession

A humorous yet poignant scene unfolded before my eyes. A three-year-old girl, clutching a toy, defiantly declared, “Mine!” when her Sunday school teacher asked if it belonged to the church. This innocent outburst sparked a profound question within me: Do I, too, exhibit a similar attitude towards the blessings God has bestowed upon me?

A Gift from Heaven

The Bible reminds us, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven” (John 3:27). This verse serves as a gentle reminder that everything we possess, from the smallest coin to our unique talents, is a gift from our gracious Lord. We often deceive ourselves into thinking we’ve earned our keep, but the truth is, God provides us with each new day, the ability to work, and the capacity to excel.

The Danger of Entitlement

As I reflected on this, I realized how easily we can fall into the trap of entitlement. We may think we deserve the blessings we receive, and that they’re ours to keep. But God’s generosity knows no bounds, and He lovingly bestows upon us more than we could ever deserve. The question is, are we willing to share these blessings freely, or do we cling to them, claiming ownership?

A Prayer for Humility

Dear Lord, help us remember that everything we have is Yours to give or take away. Thank You for providing abundantly for us. Keep us from becoming like the three-year-old, grasping Your blessings tightly and crying, “Mine!” Help us to release our grip and offer them back to You, that You may use them for Your glory, whether it be our finances, time, or talents. Amen.

A Call to Reflection

Is there something you’re holding onto, convinced it’s rightfully yours? Will you surrender it to God, trusting Him to guide you on what to do with it?
