A Life of Gratitude and Joy
Meeting Anna, a Shining Example of Faith
As I reflect on the importance of having a mentor in our Christian journey, one person comes to mind – Anna. At 81, she embodies the spirit of gratitude and joy, inspiring me to reevaluate my own approach to life.
A Life of Independence and Purpose
Anna lives in a small one-bedroom apartment in a Salvation Army Senior independent living complex, where she has created a life of independence and purpose. Despite the challenges she faces, including the loss of her husband six years ago and severe memory loss, Anna’s radiant face and infectious laughter are a testament to her unwavering faith.
Finding the Silver Lining
When I asked her about the difficulties she faces, Anna’s response was remarkable. She spoke of the benefits of not driving, saving money and getting exercise by walking to the mall. Her methodical approach to life, combined with her medication, helps her cope with memory loss. Anna’s attitude is a powerful reminder that our circumstances do not define us; it’s how we respond to them that matters.
A Heart of Gratitude
As we talked about the future, Anna’s joyous expectancy of heaven was palpable. She expressed no fear, only a deep sense of trust in God’s plan. When I showed her a photo of herself, she smiled, accepting her appearance without a hint of self-criticism. Anna’s heart is filled with gratitude, and she sees the good in every situation.
A Lesson in Abundance
Over lunch at a nearby Chinese restaurant, Anna insisted on paying for the meal. Her generosity was matched only by her humility, as she quietly added the tip to the bill. This small act spoke volumes about her character and reminded me that it’s not our age or circumstances that determine our ability to live abundantly, but our attitude.
A Prayer for Gratitude
Dear God, I pray that I may learn from Anna’s example. Help me to see the daily blessings in my life and develop a heart of gratitude. May I, like Anna, radiate joy and faith, even in the face of challenges. In Jesus’ name, amen.
