A Legacy of Faith
Growing up, I was surrounded by a mix of spiritual influences. My father came from a devout family, while my mother had no religious background. It wasn’t until after my father’s passing that we discovered the depth of his spiritual life. He had been an active member of his church, utilizing his language skills to translate and write articles for their magazine.
A Change of Heart
Despite his involvement, my father never shared his faith with us at home. It was as if he had compartmentalized his spiritual life. His brother, Uncle Ike, shared stories of my father’s dedication to the church before he joined the army. Something about that experience seemed to alter his perspective, and he eventually turned away from the church.
Aunt Jessie’s Letters
My mother, lacking spiritual guidance herself, didn’t provide any instruction. However, my father’s sister, Aunt Jessie, would occasionally send letters with uplifting Bible verses. My mother would read them aloud, and I would often sneak a peek, finding comfort in her words. I kept my feelings hidden, fearing ridicule from others.
The Comfort of Faith
As a pastor, I’ve encountered many people seeking solace. I’ve come to realize that true comfort can only be found through a relationship with Jesus. He is the one who calms life’s turbulent storms. It is through our faith in Him that we discover genuine comfort.
Reacting to Faith
How do we respond to those who radiate faith? Do we view them as “religious nuts” or do we see them as beacons of hope? Are we courageous enough to offer comfort to those around us?
A Prayer for Comfort
This week, I pray that God would still the raging storms in our lives, granting us faith and calmness. May we find solace in His presence.
“Lord, I pray that you would rebuke the wind and the raging waters; that the storms will subside, and all will be calm. Give us faith. Amen” (Luke 8:24-25)
May you have a blessed week!
