Rediscovering the Value of Others
When we reflect on our own journeys, we’re reminded that we weren’t always the people we are today. As the apostle Paul wrote, “Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth” (1 Corinthians 1:26 NIV). We were once lost, searching for meaning and purpose. And it’s this understanding that should shape the way we view others.
From Consumers to Eternal Beings
We often fall into the trap of seeing people as mere users, consumers, or customers. But they’re so much more than that. They’re eternal beings, created in the image of God, deserving of love, respect, and dignity. When we recognize our own identity in Christ, we begin to see others in a new light. We no longer define them by their circumstances or mistakes; instead, we see them through the eyes of Jesus.
A Shift in Perspective
Jesus’ approach to people was revolutionary. He saw their true value, and as a result, they came to know their own worth. He didn’t let their flaws or shortcomings define them. Rather, he looked beyond the surface and saw the beauty and potential within. This perspective is transformative, and it’s one we should strive to emulate.
Seeing Others as God Sees Them
Our goal should be to move beyond our limited, human perspective and see others as God sees them. When we do, we’ll be more likely to encourage the best in others, pointing them to the One who desires what’s best for them – Christ the Lord (Luke 2:8-10).
Reflection and Action
Take a moment to think about someone you’ve looked down on or judged. When God looks at you and this person, what similarities do you think he sees? How does this realization change the way you see others? How does it change the way you treat them? By adopting a more humble and compassionate approach, we can bring out the best in those around us, just as Jesus did.
