The Fleeting Nature of Life
“Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.” These poignant words from Psalm 144:4 remind us of the transience of human existence. One moment, a loved one is with us, sharing laughter and tears; the next, they are gone, leaving behind only memories.
A Legacy of Love and Influence
Recently, I’ve had the privilege of attending several memorials, and a common thread has emerged. It’s not the material possessions or external trappings of success that are remembered, but rather the character and actions of the individual. Their love, commitment, and impact on others are what truly leave a lasting legacy. At one memorial, I was struck by the stories of a man’s devotion to Jesus and his tireless efforts to fulfill the Great Commission. His selflessness and dedication inspired countless people, and it’s these memories that will continue to inspire long after he’s gone.
Beyond the Superficial
We often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, accumulating possessions and achievements that, in the grand scheme, hold little significance. Our nicely decorated homes, expensive cars, and fancy jewelry may bring us temporary joy, but they are ultimately fleeting and inconsequential. It’s the memories we create, the lives we touch, and the positive impact we have on others that truly matter.
Eternal Perspective
Jesus, the ultimate judge of what truly counts, will reward us for our good works when we stand before Him. As we navigate the brevity of life, may we focus on what truly adds value to those around us and to eternity. May we seek to leave behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service, rather than mere material possessions.
A Prayer for Clarity
Lord, help us to prioritize what truly makes a difference in the lives of those we leave behind and for all eternity. May we not get bogged down in the busyness of life, but instead, focus on what truly counts. Our time is short; may we use it wisely. Amen.
