Conquering the Heart of Darkness: A Journey to Gratitude

The Battle Against Cynicism: A Lifelong Struggle

As we journey through life, it’s easy to assume that our struggles with negative attitudes will diminish with age. We think that wisdom and maturity will automatically bring a kinder, gentler heart. But the harsh reality is that our sinful nature remains, even as we grow older.

The Unrelenting Temptation

I’ve found myself grappling with cynicism and critical thinking, despite my best efforts to overcome them. It’s a constant battle, one that requires a moment-by-moment connection with God to surrender these temptations to Him. As Corrie Ten Boom so eloquently put it, “When temptations come knocking at my door, I let Jesus answer.”

The Insidious Creep of Cynicism

Lately, I’ve noticed that cynicism has been gaining ground in my life. It’s a subtle yet corrosive force that can seep into our thoughts and attitudes, often without us even realizing it. But I’ve come to understand that my analytical mind, though accurate in its observations, can still be sinful if not tempered with love.

The Antidote to Cynicism: Gratitude

So, what’s the cure for this pervasive problem? The answer lies in cultivating a habit of thankfulness. A heart that’s truly thankful cannot be cynical. When we focus on the blessings in our lives, we begin to see the world through a different lens. We become happier, more at peace, and more like Christ.

A Prayer for a Thankful Heart

Father, we ask that you create in us thankful hearts, free from the grip of cynicism and criticism. Help us to recognize the blessings in our lives and to surrender our negative attitudes to you. Amen.
