Eternity in Our Hearts
The Bible reminds us that “He has put eternity in their hearts” (Ecclesiastes 3:11b). This profound truth took on a new meaning when my brother, Frank, received a life-altering diagnosis: Lou Gehrig’s disease, a terminal and progressive motor neuron disease. His plans for a house and business were suddenly replaced with a deeper focus on the eternal.
A Shift in Perspective
As we spent evenings together, our conversations turned from earthly dreams to heavenly realities. Frank’s concern for his wife, June, was evident, but God’s strength and peace were palpable in his life. He shared a remarkable vision of a towering angel, thirty stories tall, who would watch over June after he was gone. Our evenings were filled with the Gaither’s soul-stirring music, which often spoke of heaven and eternity.
Broadening Our Heavenly Perspective
During Frank’s final years, I devoured two influential books on heaven, one by Joni Eareckson and another by C.S. Lewis. These works expanded my understanding of our future home, a place we know so little about. Last week, I received an email from Betty, who felt an unshakeable sense of longing. She loved the Lord, but something was missing – a sense of home. I realized she was yearning for heaven, our true and eternal dwelling place.
A Journey Through Life
We are all on a journey, passing through this earthly realm. We will never feel fully at home here, because heaven is our true home. When my mother passed away, I knew she was in heaven, but I wasn’t certain of my own eternal destiny. Perhaps you’re unsure as well? If so, I invite you to reach out, and I’ll share what I’ve learned about being confident in our future with God.
Confidence in Eternity
Frank was sure of his eternal home, and he looked forward to it with hope. You can be too. As we navigate life’s journey, may we remember that this world is not our final destination. Our Father, we pray, help us not to forget that we are on a journey to be with You. May all who read these words know with absolute certainty that they will spend eternity with You in heaven. Amen.
