The Fleeting Nature of Life: A Wake-Up Call
As I strolled through the streets of Seattle, I stumbled upon a poignant reminder etched into the sidewalk. A golden insert caught my attention, bearing the words: “I always knew that someday I would travel this road, but yesterday I did not know it would be today.” These simple yet profound words struck a chord, prompting me to reflect on the fragility of life.
A Puff of Smoke
The Bible reminds us that our lives are but a brief, ephemeral moment – “a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes” (James 4:14). This somber reality check is echoed by John Wesley’s analogy, likening life to an arrow shot from a bow, swiftly passing over the sea of time. We are all too familiar with the brevity of life, yet we often live as if tomorrow is guaranteed.
The Focus of Estate Planning
As an attorney, I’ve had the privilege of guiding clients through the process of estate planning. While their primary concern is often the distribution of their assets after they’re gone, I emphasize the importance of life planning as well. It’s crucial to consider how we can make the most of our remaining days, however many they may be.
Living with Purpose
The sidewalk plaque served as a poignant reminder to live each day with intentionality. Rather than taking tomorrow for granted, we should strive to make the most of the time we have. As John Grant so eloquently put it, “Make sure that you live each day with praise on your lips, love in your heart, and worship in your soul… and make sure that when the roll is called up yonder, you will be there.”
A Call to Action
In the face of life’s uncertainty, let us resolve to live with purpose and passion. May we cherish each day as a precious gift, using our resources to make a positive impact on the world around us. As we journey through life, may we remain mindful of the fleeting nature of our time on earth, and strive to honor God with every breath we take.
