A Heart of Gratitude
As we reflect on the blessings in our lives, let us not forget the true meaning of thanksgiving. In Jeremiah 30:19, we are reminded that “From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained.”
A Humbling Experience
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting an economically challenged region in a foreign country, where I met with refugees who had fled their homeland in search of freedom. Despite their humble circumstances, they welcomed me into their modest apartment with open arms. As we shared a meal together, they shared their story of perseverance and gratitude. Their thankfulness was palpable, and it struck a chord in my heart.
Lessons Learned
As I listened to their story, I was reminded of the importance of gratitude. These refugees had lost everything, yet they were thankful for the freedom they had gained. They had faith, family, and freedom – the things that truly mattered. In contrast, I realized how much I took for granted back home.
The True Meaning of Thanksgiving
This week, families across America will come together to celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s a time to put aside commercialism and focus on what truly matters – family, faith, and freedom. As Christians, we are called to give thanks in all circumstances, not just on special occasions. Psalm 107:1 reminds us to “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 echoes this sentiment, urging us to “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
A Call to Action
So, what will you thank God for this Thanksgiving? Will you take a moment to reflect on the blessings in your life? Will you express gratitude for the freedom you enjoy, the family that surrounds you, and the faith that sustains you? Let us devote ourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful, as Colossians 4:2 encourages us to do.
May Our Hearts Be Filled with Gratitude
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, may our hearts be filled with gratitude for all that God has given us. May we remember the refugees I met, who taught me that true thankfulness comes from a heart that is humble and grateful for the simple things in life.
