Eternal Values: What Will Last?
As we navigate the journey of life, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of what truly matters. Recently, I was reminded of this important lesson while sorting through old financial and ministry papers.
The Reality Check
After signing our annual tax papers, my husband and I decided to purge our storage of outdated documents. As we sifted through the boxes, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Each box represented a year’s worth of hard work, dedication, and effort. But as I gazed at the stacks of paper, I realized that they would soon be nothing more than ashes.
A Timely Reminder
It was then that I recalled the powerful words of 1 Corinthians 3:11-12: “That Day will appear with fire, and the fire will test everyone’s work to show what sort of work it was. If the building that has been put on the foundation still stands, the builder will get a reward. But if the building is burned up, the builder will suffer loss.”
The True Measure of Success
In that moment, I was struck by the importance of prioritizing eternal values. It’s not about the quantity of work we do, but the quality of our motives and intentions. What will truly last is not the physical manifestations of our labor, but the impact we have on lives and the glory we bring to God.
A Call to Action
As I reflected on this truth, I was encouraged by the phrase “Only one life; will soon be past; Only what’s done for Christ will last.” This poignant reminder motivated me to recommit to making each day count for eternity, even in the seasons of life when energy levels may wane.
A Prayer for Focus
As I looked out at the pile of ashes in our backyard, I prayed a simple yet profound prayer: “Father, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Only what is done for Christ will last. Help us to prioritize eternal values and make each day count for your glory.”
