Uncovering the Spiritual DNA
A Family Affair
As I reflect on my son’s journey with a serious kidney disease, I’m reminded of the power of genetics. When he was just six years old, doctors asked us to provide a detailed family medical history to understand the root cause of his condition. With limited knowledge of our European heritage, we were unsure if there was a genetic link. However, after extensive treatment, our son recovered, and we thought that was the end of the story.
A Surprising Discovery
Years later, I stumbled upon a fascinating connection between my uncle’s condition, which he suffered from decades ago, and our son’s illness. It turned out that the genetic link was stronger than we initially thought. This experience got me thinking about the spiritual implications of our genetic makeup.
The Sin Gene
The Apostle Paul puts it bluntly: “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned” (Romans 5:12, NLT). Just as we can see physical family resemblances in our children, we can’t deny the presence of the “sin gene” in even the youngest of rebels. But there’s hope!
Adopted into God’s Family
Paul’s words bring comfort: “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners… the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and His gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:15, NLT). In a sense, we’ve been given new spiritual genes – a divine DNA that sets us apart from our sinful nature.
A New Inheritance
This adoption into God’s family defies medical science, offering us a new inheritance that’s not bound by our physical genes. We’re no longer slaves to our sinful nature, but rather children of God, free to live a life that honors Him. As Galatians 4:5 (NLT) so beautifully puts it, “God sent (Christ)… so that He could adopt us as His very own children.”
