The Deceptive Danger of Pride
A Sin That Cuts Us Off from God and Others
Pride is a subtle yet devastating sin that can lead to destruction. As Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” In fact, pride is often the root of almost every sin, and its consequences can be far-reaching.
Blinded by Self-Importance
When we allow pride to take hold, it distorts our self-perception, making us believe we’re better than we really are. This false sense of superiority convinces us that we don’t need to repent or change. We may even find ourselves praying, “God, I thank You that I am not like other men,” rather than humbly acknowledging our shortcomings and asking for mercy.
Pride: A Barrier to Intimacy
Pride not only separates us from God but also from others. When we elevate ourselves above others, we inevitably look down on them, creating a sense of disconnection. This isolation can lead us to believe that we don’t need God or others, ultimately leaving us feeling empty and alone.
Walking Humbly with God
So, what does the Lord require of us? As Micah 6:8 reminds us, “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Humility is the antidote to pride, allowing us to cultivate meaningful relationships with both God and others.
