Taming the Inner Beast: Mastering the Battle Within

The Battle Within: Choosing the Right Path

As we navigate the complexities of life, it’s essential to recognize the internal struggle that rages within each of us. This ancient conflict was aptly described by James, who wrote, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.” (James 1:19-21)

The Tale of Two Wolves

A wise Cherokee elder once shared a powerful fable with his grandchildren. He spoke of a fierce battle between two wolves that rages within every individual. One wolf represents the darker aspects of human nature, such as fear, anger, and envy, while the other embodies the virtues of joy, peace, love, and kindness. The grandfather’s simple yet profound response to his grandchild’s question about which wolf would emerge victorious still resonates today: “The one you feed.”

The Struggle Between Good and Evil

This same internal conflict is echoed in the teachings of a Rabbi, who likened the two wolves to the Evil Inclination and the Good Inclination. The former thrives on bodily appetites, while the latter flourishes through spiritual pursuits and good deeds. Ultimately, one inclination will consume the other.

The Guidance of Scripture

The apostle Paul addressed this struggle in his letter to the Galatians, urging them to live by the Spirit and reject the desires of the sinful nature. He identified the characteristics of each, contrasting the sinful nature’s tendencies towards immorality, hatred, and discord with the Spirit’s fruits of love, joy, peace, and self-control.

Taking Inventory of Our Inner Selves

Reading these words prompts us to examine our own hearts and minds. We can all recognize the presence of both wolves within us, vying for dominance. The good news is that through the power of Christ, we can overcome the evil inclinations and become the people God created us to be.

Feeding the Right Wolf

So, I encourage you to take a moment for introspection. Consider who you want to be and who God desires you to be. Make a conscious decision each day to feed the wolf that represents love, kindness, and compassion. Ask yourself: Which wolf are you feeding today?
