Surrendering to the Potter: A Lesson in Humility

When We Question the Potter

Have you ever found yourself questioning the One who formed you? It’s a natural tendency, but one that can lead to frustration and discontent. I was reminded of this recently when I overheard a woman on her mobile phone, her voice echoing off the surrounding buildings. Her tone was unmistakable – she was unhappy with the person on the other end of the call. As I watched her pace back and forth, I couldn’t help but think of the biblical warning: “Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots!” (Isaiah 45:9-10).

The Futility of Remonstrating

As I continued on my errand, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own experiences. How often had I found myself arguing with God, trying to tell Him how I wanted my life to be shaped? It’s a futile exercise, one that only leads to frustration and disconnection. The clay cannot dictate to the potter how it wants to be formed. And yet, I’ve been guilty of doing just that.

A Lesson in Humility

Lately, I’ve been learning to quiet my heart and mind, to listen to God’s gentle voice and guidance. It’s not always easy, but it’s essential. As Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). It’s a call to surrender, to let go of our own desires and ambitions and follow Him.

A Prayer for Guidance

As we navigate the complexities of life, may we remember to approach God with humility and reverence. May we quiet our hearts and minds, and seek His guidance and direction.

Prayer: Lord, please quieten our hearts and minds, enable us to let you have your way in our lives, and guide our path today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
