Stay Awake, Stay Alert: The Power of Christian Fellowship
As children of the light and day, we are called to live lives of alertness and self-control. The apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6 that we do not belong to the night or darkness, but rather to the realm of light and truth. So, how can we avoid spiritual slumber and stay awake on our journey towards heaven?
The Importance of Christian Conversation
One key way to promote Christian alertness is through meaningful conversation with fellow believers. As John Bunyan so eloquently illustrated in “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” Christian and Hopeful stayed awake on their journey by engaging in deep discussions about the ways of the Lord. By sharing our experiences, struggles, and triumphs with one another, we can keep each other awake and focused on our ultimate goal.
The Dangers of Isolation
On the other hand, Christians who isolate themselves are likely to grow drowsy and complacent. Without the support and encouragement of fellow believers, we can easily fall prey to spiritual lethargy. By keeping company with others who share our faith, we can stay refreshed, encouraged, and motivated to make progress on our spiritual journey.
Keeping the Focus on Jesus
As we engage in fellowship with others, it’s essential to keep the theme of our conversation centered on Jesus Christ. By fixing our eyes on Him and speaking of His worth, we can stay awake and alert to the spiritual realities around us. By living near to the cross and meditating on the value of our eternal destination, we can avoid spiritual slumber and stay focused on our ultimate goal.
The Urgency of Our Spiritual Journey
Remember, heaven is waiting for us, and hell is lurking near. The devil is constantly seeking to distract and deceive us. Will we sleep while the pearly gates are open, with the songs of angels waiting for us to join them, and a crown of gold ready for our heads? Certainly not! Let us continue to watch and pray, guarding against temptation and staying alert to the spiritual realities around us.
