A Call to Prayer: The Power of One
In a world torn apart by economic collapse and social unrest, one man’s courage sparked a revolution that would change the course of history. In the mid-19th century, Jeremiah Lanphier, a devoted businessman and City Missionary, took a bold step that would ignite a flame of prayer and revival across America.
The Birth of a Movement
On September 23, 1857, Lanphier opened the doors to a small prayer meeting in downtown New York, inviting others to join him in a weekly noonday gathering. As the minutes ticked by, Lanphier’s doubts crept in – five, ten, fifteen minutes passed, and not a single soul appeared. But he refused to give up. Finally, at 12:30 p.m., the first attendee arrived, followed by five others. The prayer meeting had begun.
A Tidal Wave of Faith
The following week, forty people gathered for prayer. Within six months, ten thousand businessmen were meeting daily for prayer in New York. And within two years, an astonishing one million converts were added to American churches. The greatest revival in New York’s history was underway, captivating the entire nation.
A Legacy of Faith
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of this remarkable revival, a bronze likeness of Jeremiah Lanphier was erected on Broadway, serving as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of prayer. Today, our world desperately needs to rediscover the beauty of prayer and revival. One person can make a difference. Will you be the next Jeremiah Lanphier?
