Seeking Eternal Wisdom in a Changing World

Uncovering Ancient Wisdom in Modern Times

As we wandered through the ancient city of Ephesus, in Southern Turkey, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the remnants of a once-thriving metropolis. This former Roman city, with its rich history of military and commercial significance, was a hub of activity nearly two thousand years ago. With a population of over half a million, it was a bustling seaport, connecting the East and West.

A City of Contrasts

In stark contrast to the vibrant city of old, today’s Ephesus lies in ruins, a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of human achievement. Yet, amidst the rubble, I sensed the presence of a courageous apostle, Paul, who fearlessly proclaimed the kingdom of God to the city’s inhabitants. Alongside Silas, he ministered to a small but devoted group of believers, spreading a message that was both revolutionary and counter-cultural.

Seeking Wisdom in a World of Idolatry

The Ephesians, enamored with economic prosperity and commercial power, worshipped gods crafted by human hands. In this city, where wisdom was coveted, I was drawn to the remarkably well-preserved library. The four statues adorning the front portico – representing wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and insight – stood as a testament to the people’s quest for truth. It was a powerful reminder that, despite our differences, humanity has always sought answers to life’s profound questions.

A Timeless Question

As I reflected on the ancient city’s pursuit of wisdom, I couldn’t help but ask myself: where do I seek wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and insight in my own life? Is it in the dusty pages of history, or in the fleeting whispers of modern culture? Perhaps, like the Ephesians, we too are searching for truth in all the wrong places.

Reflections and Musings

In a world where wisdom is often reduced to mere information, I am compelled to re-examine my own sources of guidance. As I walk in the footsteps of Paul and Silas, I am reminded that true wisdom can only be found in the eternal and unchanging truths of the kingdom of God.
