A Glimpse into Redemption
For over five years, I had the privilege of exchanging letters with Stephen D, an inmate at a maximum-security prison in Indiana. His recent release on April 13th marks a new chapter in his life, and mine. Through his tightly scripted, margin-to-margin letters, Stephen shared an unfiltered view of life behind bars and the transformative power of God’s grace.
A Window into Prison Life
Stephen’s letters, often spanning 8-12 pages, offered a unique perspective on the harsh realities of prison life. Surrounded by sex offenders, murderers, gangsters, and drug peddlers, Stephen’s own past was marked by grievous mistakes. Yet, his words conveyed a profound sense of hope and redemption, as he described how Jesus was transforming him and those around him.
Miracles in the Midst of Darkness
In his final letter, Stephen painted a vivid picture of a worship service among prisoners: “The Lord is truly working miracles! As I look around, the magnitude of what Jesus is doing is nothing short of revealing who He is ‘all for our good’.” His words echoed with a sense of awe and gratitude, as he described the signs of God’s mercy and the sounds of rejoicing from the redeemed.
The Challenge of Reentry
But Stephen’s story also highlights a pressing issue: the struggle of ex-prisoners to find a sense of belonging in churches after their release. According to the prison chaplain, many prisoners who turn their lives over to Jesus in prison often face rejection or suspicion from churches, leaving them feeling unwelcome. This raises a crucial question: would we, as individuals, welcome someone like Stephen into our communities of faith?
Embracing Redemption
As we reflect on Stephen’s journey, we’re reminded that God’s grace knows no bounds. It’s a call to examine our own hearts and ask: would I welcome him? May God’s grace abound in all our lives, and may we learn to embrace the redeemed, just as He has.
