From Frustration to Faith: The Inspiring Story Behind “Fill My Cup Lord”

When Frustration Meets Faith

A crowded schedule and a tardy couple were the perfect recipe for frustration. But little did anyone know, this pastor’s annoyance would soon give birth to an all-time classic hymn.

A Moment of Inspiration

Richard Blanchard, a man of faith, sat at the piano, passing the time away while waiting for the late couple to arrive for their pre-marital counseling session. As he pecked out a melody, a hymn began to take shape. That hymn would later become the beloved “Fill My Cup Lord.”

A Unique Approach to Composition

Blanchard’s creative process was unlike many others. He would first develop a thought or read Scripture, then craft the words to his pieces. Only after that would he create the music “by ear” to fit the words. This approach resulted in a distinctive blend of Big Band era chords and harmonies with the heartfelt message of southern gospel music.

A Life of Trials and Triumphs

Despite his remarkable accomplishments, Blanchard’s life was not without its challenges. He battled a lung condition that required two surgeries, leaving him with limited lung capacity. His son, Richard, suffered a devastating accident that left him a quadriplegic at just seventeen years old. Later, the family faced the loss of their son and the fatal illness of one of their daughters. Yet, throughout his forty-year ministry, Blanchard continued to compose dozens of gospel hymns, write a musical, produce a newspaper column, and launch a popular television ministry.

From Frustration to Faith

It’s a powerful reminder that even in our most trying moments, God can work wonders. That initial frustration, born out of a couple’s tardiness, was transformed into something that would bring joy and inspiration to countless people. So, the next time you feel annoyed, remember that God can take that time and turn it into something truly remarkable.

A Prayer for the Thirsty

What is your “fill my cup prayer”? Jesus, I come to you, aware that I cannot fill the emptiness within me or make myself whole. I come to you because you have already made it possible for me. So, I bring you my empty cup, Lord, for I thirst and hunger for your fullness, and I know that you will fill me. Fill my cup, Lord.
