Unshakable Identity
In a world that measures success by achievements, we often find ourselves chasing validation through accomplishments. We proudly display our diplomas, awards, and trophies, and rightly so. Celebrating our hard work is essential, but when we tie our self-worth to these accomplishments, we risk building on unstable ground.
The Shaky Foundation of Achievement
What happens when illness, age, or setbacks strip us of our ability to achieve? Our sense of self-worth crumbles, leaving us feeling worthless and like a burden to others. This is a harsh reality check, forcing us to reevaluate the foundation of our identity.
God’s Unconditional Value
Fortunately, God’s value system operates on a different plane. He values us not for what we achieve, but for who we are. He chose us before creation, long before we could prove our worth. This truth liberates us from the pressure to perform, allowing us to find true self-worth in God’s eyes.
Seeing Ourselves Through God’s Eyes
Ephesians chapter 1 reveals the stunning truth that we are loved, chosen, and valued by God. The phrase “in Christ” appears over 172 times in the New Testament, emphasizing our position in Him. We are washed by His blood, clothed in His righteousness, and filled with His Spirit. This privilege is available to all who accept His gracious offer.
Being Over Doing
A chance encounter with an engineer drove this point home. When I praised his profession, he humbly corrected me, saying, “I’m a person who does engineering.” This subtle distinction highlights the importance of prioritizing our identity in Christ over our accomplishments.
Where Do You Find Your Worth?
So, what do you base your self-worth on? Remember, God sent His only Son to die for you, demonstrating the immense value He places on your life. He longs to be close to you, and His love is not conditional on your performance.
No Condemnation
Whatever your past may hold, God does not condemn you. Romans 8:1 declares, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God values you that much. May we learn to see ourselves through His eyes and live according to His value system.
Prayer
Dear God, help me to understand my true worth in Your eyes and to live by Your value system.
