Embracing the Art of Stillness
In a world that values productivity and constant motion, being still can seem like an un-American activity. Yet, it’s in these moments of quiet contemplation that we can truly connect with God.
A Personal Lesson in Stillness
I recall a beautiful Saturday morning in October, surrounded by the vibrant colors of the north Georgia mountains. I was at a retreat center with twenty students, eager to learn about student leadership. As we were given an assignment to spend 45 minutes alone with God, I felt an overwhelming urge to be the first one to reach a picturesque swing overlooking the lake. My competitive spirit took over, and I rushed to claim my spot, almost forgetting the true purpose of the exercise.
Missing the Point
As I sat on the swing, catching my breath and reflecting on my actions, I realized that I had missed the essence of the experience. In my haste, I had overlooked the small white chapel, the wooden cross on the shore, and the opportunity to truly connect with God. It was then that I understood the importance of living life slowly, savoring each moment, and being still in the presence of the Lord.
The Gift of Slowness
John Piper’s approach to reading the Bible slowly resonates with me. I, too, desire to hear God’s voice in every aspect of my life, not just in designated times of devotion. I long to live life at a pace that allows me to drink deeply from the well of His wisdom and love.
Breaking Free from Addiction
Since my epiphany on the swing, I’ve been experimenting with stillness, solitude, and silence. It’s been a challenging journey, as I’ve come to realize how addicted I am to activity and noise. But I’ve discovered that my soul and spirit crave stillness, and that it’s essential to make it a regular part of my day.
The Challenge
Will you take 15 minutes to simply sit in silence, free from distractions? Allow yourself to be still, look, listen, and remember what it’s like to be in God’s presence. Ask Him how He wants to meet you in His presence, and meditate on the “be still” verses that speak to your heart.
Scriptural Reflections
- Be still and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
- Be still by the side of the Lord. (Exodus 33:21)
- Stand still and see the deliverance of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 20:17)
- Be still, it’s the antidote to fretting. (Psalm 37:7)
- Let Jesus rebuke your storms, “Peace, be still.” (Mark 4:39)
By embracing stillness, we can quiet our souls, hear God’s voice, and experience His presence in a deeper way. Will you take the challenge to “be still and know that I am God”?
