Eternal Perspective: Finding Joy in Life’s Struggles
In the grand tapestry of eternity, our struggles are but a fleeting moment. As the apostle Paul so eloquently put it, “Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17, NKJV).
The Scales of Justice
The phrase “weight of glory” evokes the image of an ancient pan scale, where the blindfolded lady of justice carefully balances the weights of our struggles against the eternal joys of heaven. On one side, she stacks the burdens of our lives: famines, firings, forgotten birthdays, and bad breaks. The weight of these struggles can be crushing, causing the pan to plummet.
God’s Response
But God doesn’t simply remove our burdens or eliminate our struggles. Instead, He responds by offsetting them with an eternal weight of glory. He places endless joy, measureless peace, and an eternity of His presence on the other side of the scale. As we gaze upon this divine balancing act, everything changes. The burdens lift, and the heavy becomes light when weighed against eternity.
Enduring for a Moment
If life is indeed just a moment, can’t we endure any challenge for that brief span? Can’t we bear sickness, loneliness, persecution, and struggle for just a moment? The answer lies not in our own strength but in our eternal perspective. We can wait for our peace, knowing that it’s not about us or our present circumstances.
A Shift in Focus
When we focus on eternity, our struggles become mere moments in the grand scheme of things. We begin to see that life is not about us or our fleeting troubles but about the eternal weight of glory that awaits us. So let us lift our eyes to the horizon of heaven, where our struggles are being weighed against the infinite joys of eternity.
