Embracing the Present: A Fresh Perspective
As we navigate life’s journey, it’s easy to get caught up in reminiscing about the past or worrying about the future. But Psalm 118:24 reminds us to focus on the present: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
The Dangers of Living on Memories
Oswald Chambers wisely cautioned against relying on past experiences, urging us to keep the Word of God living and active in our daily lives. When we dwell too much on memories, we risk shutting out the excitement and wonder of the present moment. Younger generations often tune out when they hear phrases like “Back in my day” or “Those were the good old days.” Instead, we should strive to approach each day with a sense of curiosity and anticipation.
A Heart of Wonder
I recall a remarkable encounter with my husband’s elderly grandmother. Despite her many years of walking with Christ, she still exuded a sense of childlike wonder when discovering new truths in the Bible. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it reminded me that our faith should always be characterized by a sense of awe and discovery.
God’s Promise of Newness
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as a God of new beginnings and fresh starts. In Isaiah, He declares, “See, I am doing a new thing!” Jeremiah echoes this theme, assuring us that God’s compassions are “new every morning.” Even in the darkest of times, Ezekiel was promised a “new heart and a new spirit.” These promises remind us that every day brings an opportunity for growth, transformation, and discovery.
A Prayer for Today
As I reflect on my own life, I realize that it’s easy to fall into the trap of nostalgia. Lord, help me to resist the temptation to dwell in the past and instead focus on the fresh work you’re doing in my life today. May each new day bring a sense of wonder, excitement, and discovery as I seek to know You better.
By embracing the present and seeking God’s fresh guidance, we can experience a deeper sense of joy, purpose, and fulfillment in our lives.
