Embracing the Paradox of Faith
As believers, we often find ourselves torn between two conflicting realities. On one hand, we’re assured that God works everything out for our good (Romans 8:28). Yet, on the other hand, we’re confronted with the harsh realities of a broken world. How can we reconcile these two seemingly opposing truths?
The Tension of Faith
I once thought that being a Christian would shield me from life’s struggles. But experience has taught me that this isn’t always the case. While I’ve experienced God’s direction, peace, and protection, I’ve also witnessed tragedy and evil. The murder of a friend, the suicide of a colleague – these events can shake our faith and leave us feeling helpless.
Called to Engage, Not Withdraw
In the face of adversity, it’s tempting to disengage from the world and focus solely on our own spiritual journey. But Jesus’ example shows us a different path. He immersed himself in the midst of humanity’s mess, eating with sinners and experiencing the full range of human emotions (Mark 2:15-16, Matthew 26:21-31). He didn’t withdraw from the world; instead, he engaged with it, bringing light and hope to those around him.
Fragile, Fallible, and Dependent
As followers of Christ, we’re called to be fragile, fallible, and dependent on God in the midst of life’s chaos. We’re not meant to be sucked in by the world’s temptations, but rather to bring God’s kingdom to bear in our hearts and in our surroundings.
Rejoicing in Acceptance
Like Zacchaeus, we can rejoice in being accepted as followers of Christ (Luke 19:6). We’re commissioned to go out into the world, healing the sick, delivering people from evil, and proclaiming the coming kingdom of God. But Jesus reminds us that our ultimate joy should come from knowing our names are written in the Book of Life (Luke 10:20).
A Prayer for Focus
As we go out into the world today, let us pray for God’s focus and vision. May we see how we can bring his kingdom’s light to bear in our hearts and in our surroundings. May we remember that without our names written in the Book of Life, all our efforts count for nothing.
May our prayer be: Lord, grant us your focus on what is important to you and your vision for us to see how we can bring your kingdom’s light to bear in our hearts and where we are. Amen.
