Beyond Feel-Good Philanthropy: The True Meaning of Giving

The True Spirit of Giving

As I reflect on my experiences attending charity events, I’m filled with a sense of warmth and fulfillment. It’s wonderful to support a worthy cause alongside friends, feeling good about making a positive impact. However, a recent reading of Matthew’s passage on giving prompted me to reexamine my motivations.

Giving with Integrity

Do I give solely because it makes me feel good, or would I still be willing to help others without any personal benefits? Would I offer shelter and support to a homeless person I met on the street, without fearing for my possessions or comfort? Honestly, I doubt it. It’s easier to donate to an organization, rationalizing that they’re better equipped to handle the situation.

The Fear of Anonymous Giving

Another question lingers: Would I still contribute to my church if I weren’t part of a planned giving program? I readily offer my time and talents, but would I give financially without recognition, not just on Sundays during the offering? These are tough questions to answer, but essential ones to consider in light of Matthew’s words.

The Biblical Perspective

Matthew 6:1-4 reminds us: “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them… But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

A Prayer for Self-Reflection

Dear God, thank you for sending your Son to guide us on your path. Help us recognize that our giving is not about us, but about honoring you. May our acts of kindness be driven by a desire to serve you, rather than seeking human recognition. Amen.
