Beyond Empty Boxes: Building a Lasting Legacy

A Legacy of Empty Boxes: A Reflection on Eternal Treasure

As we journey through life, we often find ourselves accumulating possessions, convinced that they hold value and significance. But what if these treasures were to lose their meaning, leaving behind only empty boxes?

A Family’s Discovery

A woman lived a long and peaceful life, leaving behind a legacy that her family would never forget. When they gathered to clear out her attic, they were met with an astonishing sight: stacks of empty boxes, towering above them like skyscrapers. These were no ordinary boxes, but gift boxes, once filled with love and thoughtfulness, now yellowed with age and some still bearing tags that read “To Grandma, from Johnny” or “To Mom, with love from Sue.” The irony was palpable – a thrifty woman who had lived through hard times, yet her attic was filled with empty containers.

A Sad Legacy

As the family reflected on this discovery, they couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Instead of sharing stories about their loved one’s kindness and generosity, they found themselves discussing the empty boxes. It was a poignant reminder that our earthly possessions, no matter how precious they may seem, are fleeting and can become meaningless in the end.

Storing Up Treasures in Heaven

The Bible reminds us, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19-20). As we consider our own legacies, we must ask ourselves: are we collecting empty boxes, void of meaning and useless in the future? Or are we investing in eternal treasures – the people whose lives have been touched by our love, prayers, and generosity?

A Time for Reflection

As we ponder our own mortality, let us reflect on the kind of legacy we want to leave behind. Will it be one of empty boxes, or will it be a testament to the impact we’ve had on the lives of others? The choice is ours, and the time to start building our eternal treasures is now.
